Of course... Popcorn noise is considered to be a particularly offensive and
annoying
form of noise. That is why such an effort is made to get rid of it.
I had a fight with my father years ago... I was building a 'fuzzbox' (the one
from
Craig Anderton's Timbre Gate project, if you must know :^). Dad saw the back
to back diodes and said, "you'll need to remove these, they will clip the shit
out of the signal."
Informing him that was my intent, he said "Get out of here you little bastard.
I work
ALL DAY LONG to get rid of distortion and here you are trying to make it
DELIBERATELY !!!".. He then offered the opinion that "square waves sound like
shit".
He was not musically inclined, and did not know about waveshape differences
accounting for a big part of the 'sound' of instruments. WE LIKE SQUARE WAVES
!!!
However... we 'may' not like popcorn noise. Your taste may vary. I would not
want
to mix popcorn noise in my music. I might want to trigger other events with it.
otoh I saw a band that beat on an I-beam with a ball-peen hammer. Go figure :^P
