Depends on how many wires you need to connect...

Not necessarily. I've done them with pliers, and also soldering the leads to
the pins. You might want to get the tool to remove the pins from the shells,
though.
Two kinds of connector pins out there- the "round" ones in a couple of
different sizes (.062 and .093 come to mind) and which are okay for a lot of
stuff, and the "square pins" setup, better if there's any power being
handled, they're also easier to remove from the cable connector. See any PC
power supply connector for the former (though those are NOT "Molex" but "AMP"
or something) and the typical smaller PC power connector usually meant for
the floppy drive for the latter.

I haven't bought any for a long time, but when I did I just went down to the
local electronics wholesaler we have around here. I'll say this, though --
don't buy little packs like what you see at radio shack, those are *way*
expensive for what you get, I always bought connector pins in bags of 100 at
least.
