Hmm - After following this discussion for awhile I've been playing 
around with processig various types of noise through my Cyndustries Quad 
Comparator (http://www.cyndustries.com/modules_staircomparator.cfm), and 
assuming I'm calling "popcorn" noise the same thing as everybody else, 
it will does a pretty good job after some careful adjustment of the the 
"ref" knobs. Make a good vinyl record pop generator too...
