[sdiy] Amplitude-based channel selection

I've been playing around with circuits that would route an input  
signal between two outputs based on the amplitude of the signal. What  
I want is for small amplitude signals to mostly go to channel 1, and  
large amplitude signals to mostly go to channel 2. I've tried  this  
using an EF with a voltage controlled panner, but I am not happy with  
the results.

But there must be a better way. I've been thinking about non-linear  
transfer functions that might do this, but I wanted to ask if anyone  
has experimented with anything similar. Perhaps a parallel compressor/ 
limiter could do it.

Has anyone had any successes that I could draw on?
