There is some truth to this, but our young culture is not so unified.
There are very high-ranking and apocalyptically-minded religious
fundamentalists in North America as well (not naming any countries >;]
). European culture and its descendants have often been at odds with
eastern culture for weird reasons, usually irrational. The reason why
old Europe and now the US *bother* China and the middle eastern
countries is because we won't have them not do business. They cannot
turn their back on us and just keep their spices, mathematics, science,
oils, silk, fabrics, science, etc - so they must be confronted. Notice
how cultures who won't do business, or who offer unfavorable terms, are
never, never left alone. What free trade really means, as opposed to
what the World Bank likes to promote, is that if you don't like
someone's price you walk away, not resort to subterfuge. The US and
England do routinely destabilize countries, even democracies, to get
better prices in trade.
Of course creating a benevolent civilisation is worth working for, but
the only evidence I am provided with that this is happening is a lot of
rhetoric. If your government is not directly accountable to its
citizens about everything, then all it takes is some altruistic words
dropped here in there while they conduct business as usual. Do
documents from the US State Department read like enlightened
philosopical treatises, or like the plans of a militaristic trade
cartel? YMMV
I do not condone terrorism or attack on civilians anywhere, but I do
condone tactical strikes against deceptive governments. Whoever reads
this, it probably includes yours. Honesty and full disclosure are
prerequisite for any representative system, otherwise it is just a
clever form of minority rule with a large proportion of marginalized
people.
