[sdiy] Sigh... days like this...

I think we can be excused for airing our thoughts on days when significant
tragic events happen, if only for that one day. Ran across this recently
which may be relevant:
Joe: It's all about imperialism. The privileged rich countries exploit the
poor countries where huge numbers live in poverty, to get control of their
resources. No wonder the inhabitants of the poor countries lash out with
what they see as the only hope of saving their threatened
societies!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns =
"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Sam: It's not about imperialism. It's about culture. Let's call it Us and
Them. They promote the suppression of all earthly pleasures. They promote
total and unquestioning submission to a mystical ideology, with rituals and
severe restrictions. They promote absolute control over all females and the
deprivation of all but the simplest privileges from females. They believe
that failure to adhere to these ways is grounds for execution.
Joe: But who is to say that we should criticize their way of life? Culture
should be preserved, no matter how different it may seem to some other
culture. Cultures are arbitrary - there are no absolute rules. Maybe their
way of life is truly better over long historical periods. Maybe humans need
that kind of discipline to keep from eventually dissolving into chaos.
Sometimes it looks like our culture, with our historically recent lifting of
most, if not all, ritualistic restrictions, is plummeting into sin and
anarchy!
Sam: Preservation of culture is a valid concept. But that is not going to
work here; they cannot tolerate the existence of other cultures that flaunt
the very things they consider to be deepest sacrilege. The very fact that
blood is still coursing through our veins fills them with murderous outrage.
As long as we are still breathing they will not stop. Not only do they think
that it's acceptable to slash the throats of infidels like us, they
encourage it as a virtuous and noble act. The only way we can survive is to
eliminate their murderous philosophy. Unfortunately, this may involve
killing them before they kill us.
Joe: But how can you not see?? That idea is merely the mirror image of
theirs! They want to kill us, we want to kill them, all because our
philosophies are diametrically opposed! You cannot kill to prevent
killing!!!
Sam: No, it is you who cannot see. There are two possible planes of
existence - the one we are in, and the (admittedly unproven) one after this
one. We care about this one, they do not. You have one culture that lives in
this world but does not want to be here, so they are eager to take us and
themselves out by killing. The next (possibly imaginary) world is all they
care about. They can gleefully murder an innocent child and think that they
have done a noble thing. Then you have another culture that wants to be here
in this world, to live in it and love in it and create a benevolent
civilization where all inhabitants are strong and free. The next world is a
valid concept, but we are in no hurry to get there. Do you see? Those of us
who are here, in this reality, and do not want to leave, are justified in
protecting our existence. The two opposing philosophies are not in a
balance.

What are we to conclude from:
>There is no right way to kill humans, period.
coupled with
>England, it is in fact War on your own terms, as you deserve.
We must, it seems, conclude that Jay thinks 'there is no right way to kill
humans, period, except this one'.
Also, I wonder what Jay means by "right way" to kill humans - does he mean
methods to kill humans (as in, 'using a bomb' is more correct than 'using a
gun'), or does he mean 'killing humans is wrong always'. I think he thinks
he means the latter, but then the contradiction noted above undermines
that....
Either way, all this is the mark of someone ranting-without-thinking, and of
course what appears to be sociopathology for its own sake (hence the
insensitivity and mean-spiritedness).
Either way, this American is having a pint or more for England tonight!
After all, England gave birth to G.E. Moore and Bertrand Russell!
