[sdiy] How do you write an AVR softsynth ??

How in the world do you get smart enough to write an AVR synth like Jarek
did? What books do you read? Are there any sites dedicated to such things? I
have searched and found a lot of stuff but it's all general purpose DSP not
specific to a softsynth for a microprocessor. I have read Hal Chamberlin's
book and while it is excellent, again it doesn't address a standalone
softsynth.

Any direction would be appreciated.
