Back in their early days, Aphex was pretty over-the-top in terms of how
they marketed the original Aural Exciter. For one thing, you couldn't
buy one --
they only leased them, and they came with all kinds of seals on the box
with
dire warnings of how much trouble one might be in if one took a gander
to
peek inside. You rented one for a session, and the minute the session
was over, the Aphex people were there to re-take possession of it.
And they loved to spread all kinds of rumors about how ultra-advanced
the circuitry was, and how it was going to make all other effects
units and reverbs obsolete.
But yeah, for a while it was "the sound" and producers ran everything
through it indiscriminately, the way some do now with, say, a Finalizer.
