I don't quite agree with that.  There ARE good places for shunt regulation.
A Zener shunt regulator will never go unstable, or oscillate, and there is
no regulator that will have faster response.

A high power design like the main power supply for a synth is a VERY bad
place for a shunt regulator. Use them only for low power.

BTW (KD)... the LM317 and LM337 are also "from the past"....
