I think it is too much for what I do, but it would benefit many people.

I am not a plank-spanker (keyboardist). I am not a very dextrous
performer in any context, but rather one of those annoying technical
people who make algorithmic sequences and do lots of knob twiddling.
Playing fast, dense music with lots of continuous controller messages
or sysex things get bogged down quickly. Try doing microtuned speedcore
with some amount of "synthesis" info and MIDI starts to look quite
limited. I have even had devices completely die for good from algo MIDI
streams accidently going to 1200 BPM or so, now I put a MIDI "high-pass
tempo filter" on my Max sequencers.

I have some MIDI gear here, but am leaning more towards OSC - Open
Sound Control - for my hybrid and digital projects. OSC is an
open-source, 32-bit, ethernet-based protocol which can cover gestures
AND synthesis data. It has been developed at CNMAT for some years now.
Some softwares such as Max/MSP, Bidule, and Reaktor can readily
communicate via OSC. There is beginning to be some commercial hardware
support also. Most OSC hardware is still custom DIY stuff. It looks
fast, but I haven't had occaision to use OSC yet because it'd just be
between two computers. Making OSC hardware will be fun to try.
