I don't know what they cost, but the power consumption would be enough to 
deter me....

Personally, for VCOs, I am finding that the all electronic compensation I 
am using to be working out quite nicely.  Draws very little power, and only 
adds about a $1.50 to the cost (you need to add an LM13700/600 and another 
dual opamp).  And you can either use the LM3046 (CA3046) or an MAT04 as the 
expo transistors (you need four matched transistors rather than 2).
