[sdiy] what makes a transformer vibrate?

The force that changing magnetic fields exert on the windings and the
core make a transformer vibrate. If windings and core sheets are lose
it will be worse. You can losen both if the transformer is overloaded,
either by accident or by construction. The stray field of the
transformer will also influence any magnetic or elctrically conductive
material in the vicinity.

It is an annoyance, especially if one of the harmonics hum instead of
the fundamental. You get rid of it by replacing the transformer or by
vacuum soaking it in resin. The better ones already are treated that
way, but sometimes the resin becomes brittle after some time.

Toroidal transformers have far less stray field to entice sympathetic
vibrations and less chance of showing core hum.
