I'd need to see what you are doing - do you have a schematic of your mod ?

It might be possible to keep the passive attenuator and isolate it with a
diode...
so a more positive voltage will increase the center frequency, but it will not
load the existing circuit otherwise.  You might lose from 0.2V to 0.7V of your
incoming CV, probably not a real issue.
