Gas discharge diodes have a snapback I-V-curve, so you can use them to 
produce oscillations and as frequency dividers. You could do the same 
with thyristors, BTW. You can even install the equivalent of the 
trigger input of a thyristor on a neon tube, although you have to 
trigger with a high voltage pulse, not a current spike.
