The AL value as such doesn't say much. The question is how much area a 
turn covers, depending on the cross section area of the core.

The figure of merit is the maximum flux the core will handle. That can 
be found on the manufacturers site.

As with any magnetic device without an air gap, DC components should be 
avoided. (Although some ham ops seem to make use of this, current 
controlled inductance ;-))

I wonder if you ask these questions to the manufacturers of those 
miniature inductors as well. :-P
