I found some fax machine CCDs that are just 8192cell BBDs.  I put an LED on
one end, and cover the whole thing with heatshrink tubing.  Feed signal in
and clock the CCD.  You're not supposed to clock the CCD with the lamp on
cause, well, it wouldnt work for its original application.. but it works
fine for audio, if a little noisier then a normal BBD.

Newer fax machines have an electronic shutter or bounce the cell voltage
back to a secondary BBD before stepping the scanned line out and thus work
work for this, and with BBDs still being made there's not much call for it
but was a fun exercise.
