I'm voting for the machined pins as well.
I've never had a problem withthem in my life
(except one, out of thousands, that had the
inside of one pin missing.. as luck would have it, 
this was the V+ pin on some logic, and the chip 
powered up (sometimes) via leakage thru 
another pin, much to my confusion).

But, as far as sockets go, I'd rather solder
the chip in!
