I appreciate this as well. Sound should be good at low levels too.
I would just like to caution anyone on the list (JH included) that even
with low volume levels, be careful about spending too much time using
headphones to do your mixing. Even at reduced levels, the headphones can
deliver serious transient impact to the ear drum due to the low mass of
the air involved in sound transmission and cause hearing damage over
time. This can be mitigated by not using headphones that completely
cover the ear (isolation style ear cups) and using the "open" style of
headphones.
