[sdiy] what is DIY?

I think several things are missing: Software synths, DSP applications,
microcontroller designs. In neither of those cases a schematic makes much
sense.

Perhaps the DIY award has to be split in several classes (in no particular
order):

	Electronic DIY design
	Mechanical DIY design
	Software DIY design
	Cloning
	Mods/Circuit bending

I don't see why the drawings/schematics would have to be free either. Just
because someone charge a fee for a copy of the schematics doesn't mean
he/she didn't design it? As long as it isn't mass production I think it's
ok.

I see the following criterions:

1. The nominee has built the thing himself.
2. The nominee has either
	a. designed and manufactured the circuitry himself
	b. designed and manufactured the enclosing himself
	c. designed and implemented the software himself
	d. manufactured the circuitry and enclosing himself
 	e. designed, manufactured and added mods himself
	f. added uniqeness in some other way
3. The nominated device is not intended for mass production.

Of course, "himself" is replacable with "herself" (or even "itself" ;)

Please don't get mad if I'm just being a moron and missed the whole point.

Subject: [sdiy] what is DIY?

Struggling with the criteria for what is and what is not DIY, I've come up
with an answer:

A devices qualifies for DIY status if the designer freely provides all the
information needed for others to build their own copies of it. Note the word
"freely," as in "for free."

A product does not qualify (by my standard) if you have to buy a PC board to
get the schematics, for example.

On the other hand, selling PCBs or kits or complete products is fine so long
as the schemo is available for free.

How's that?
