I've used 78xx/79xx for years and never had a problem with them.

I'll admit, though, there is some fun in DIY'ing a nice bench power 
supply...

This fellow designed a very nice discrete transistor bench supply:

His accomplishments make me feel *very* small - small enough to trip 
over a tin whisker...
