Although this may be a little OT, at least one list member has discussed
using very high speed ADC/DAC in an SDIY project. Check this out:

1/12/2005: Analog Devices, Inc., the world leader in data converter
technology, today introduced the industry's first 16-bit digital-to-analog
converter (DAC) to achieve a sample rate of 1 GSPS
(giga-samples-per-second), making it twice as fast as competing
solutions....
