I have known some Hammond players who would, in the middle of playing, reach
down and turn the switch OFF! Then start the motors back up again before
things died completely...
Maybe that's how?

I think it's possible, as long as you don't try and go too far. Whether
going too far would be in excess of the point where you start getting some
interesting musical effects is another matter, though, and one that could
be found only through some experimentation...
