Use a breadboard strip. The kind that only has rows for ICs. (you don't
need buses) Put the inputs on one side, put the outputs on the other,
then stripped wire is all you need. There is usually five holes each side,
one for the connection to the circuit and four to play with. Or if you
want to throw resistors, diodes or caps at it, it's ready. It's not free,
but pretty cheep and reliable. And like a proto circuit, colored wire
helps you figure out the mess.

Digikey has 3M terminal strips:
34 - 17 each side = $7.37
68 - 34 each side = $10.97
96 - 48 each side = $13.99
128 - 64 each side = $16.92

[ Or, use half of each side for I/O and leave room for adding a chip or
two for trying new wierd stuff. ]

That's what I did with a little sequencer I built. I dubbed it "Geek Seq"
cuz only a geek would enjoy sticking wires in little holes to make music.

[ osc & counter ] counter outputs to -> [ terminal strip ] to inputs of
4051 ->  [ 4051 & 8 pitch knobs ]

Wire straight for 8 step, use different outputs for repeating phrases, add
a logic chip to play games with the pattern. :) All this was when I was
much younger and CMOS chips were very afraid. Rewire it while it's hot! :)
