as a starter, you might look at the component kits from jameco:

i've bought a few of their refill kits (the full kits include those plastic parts bins, which i don't care for), and it's an ok deal... not top-of-the-line quality, and i still order the good stuff for big projects & critical applications, but good to have on hand for prototypes, experiments, and "oh shit, it's 2am and i just need one more cap to finish" kind of moments.
