You've heard incorrectly. I've seen tube circuits that definitely had
problems caused by whiskers.

Also, I suspect (but I have no proof yet) that the whiskers are often
responsible for a certain amount of AC power leakage onto the metal chassis
of Hammond organs. That would make it an operator safety hazard, as well as
a mere circuit malfunction. It's really common to see some AC voltage
riding on the tube chassis of a Hammond organ.
