Not directly related to what you were saying, but interesting I think : my 
employer had a problem with silver whiskers forming in a silver-loaded epoxy 
potting compound. the silver loading was designed to increase thermal 
conductivity but after a time (a couple of years I think I remember it 
being), the whiskers formed conduction paths that shorted out some SM i.c. 
components.
