Don't forget the 74HC4046, it has 3 phase comparators. One musically
interesting thing might be the use of a phase comparator (like number 1) that
will happily lock onto harmonics instead of the fundamental if that happens to
be convenient for it. You can also do things like replacing the VCO with
another external type, in this case, something like a 74HC4046 or CD4046
contributes a phase comparator. Or if you're going to use phase comparator 1
anyway, all you really need is an XOR gate and build the PLL more or less
discretely (not necessarily only using 3 legged parts).
