I've built about a half dozen of these units (some as gifts for family and
friends), and haven't had any problems at all with them. Several of them have
been modified to enable pitch zero adjustment, volume sensitivity adjustment,
and several types of tone and timbre alteration. Some of the mods were of my
own devising, though the most recent one incorporated modifications listed on
Max Baars' late lamented website (Maxie's Pages -- try the Wayback Machine). I
used this unit outdoors for a couple of hours on Halloween, running it
through an Alesis Ineko unit for extra weirdness.
They remind me of the old SWTPC unit from Popular Electronics in the late
'60's (which was a unit I could never get running). I've built a Theremax, and
still can't get the volume control to work well. But the Silicon Chip unit, no
problemo.
