Why yes.

The tannerin (as far as I can see) is an audio oscillator,
arranged with a mechanical ?string on drum, like old
tube radios had?) to make playing easier.
Advantage: total stability & repeatability.

The cheapest theremin kit is the Jaycar one (from Silicon Chip
magazine) but, it is very difficult to get to work well
(I know of at least three unsuccessful attempts, including
mine.)
For an easy build, I would try an optical theremin (that is, an
audio oscillator with light dependant resistors for the 
frequency elements, so you just block light to them to 
change the freq).
