[sdiy] AR Question

so i've built charlie lamms modified version of this which uses 2 transistors to deal with the gate..  i think..      having a slight problem with it..  if i apply a gate signal, no change, just high output..   if i apply the gate at the output of the  first transistor, it will go up, and at the output of the 2nd it will go down.. so something is awry in that first transistor stage i belive..  i've tried a different transis, and checked my wiring 2 x..   any ideas whats wrong with it?   his circuit is here:

  Just messing around with the attached circuit over here..   it seems to give a more desirable range when i present 12v on the gate..   how can i mod this to accept 5v?  
  i've tried a few experiments with a transistor (which i'm almost positive is the answer), but i don't know enough about them to make it work..  anyone, anyone?
