That _could_ be the case, but why also place outputs on adjacent pins? 
Placing the + inputs on adjacent pins could also have been done by turning
the amps around, outputs "out" and in doing so, they could have produced a
more symmetrical layout that would be visually (at least) more sensible. 
I'm more inclined to believe my sterno theory, after all, it does cause
blindness, so visual sensibility wouldn't matter.  (c;
