You can't really replace a 3900 with a regular opamp. It is a morton            
amplifier, that is something different. They shouldn't be THAT hard to find.

That being said, why not just use another LM3900?  If you dig through the
archives you'll find lots of LM3900 discussion on why its both loved and
hated too...
