www.emachineshop.com now has reasonable prices on injectionmolding stuff.
Of course you're still looking at a $500 setup fee or thereabouts...

TAP Plastics has cool plastic balls for a couple bucks.  Maybe a ping-pong
ball is the right size?  Go to a craft store and get the clear epoxy goo
used for making paperweights, use a ping-pong ball as the mold.  You could
stick a threaded insert in while it was still goo, might be amusing to get
the ball off the epoxy stuff tho...
