FWIW I've built three pitch shifters, the first used the hetrodyne 
approach, the second used a ring modulator, which one could argue is 
similar to the first I suppose, and the third used a BBD driven by a 
sawtooth. I wasn't really thrilled with any of them<G>! If I had to pick 
a favorite, I guess I'd choose the first, but it was a real bear to get 
working!

For anyone who just wants to play with the third approach, most of the 
older analog delay pedals can be pressed into service. The simplest demo 
is to simply play something into it and move the delay time knob real 
fast... instant pitch shift!
