Hey Paul,
Just a random and possibly/probably daft idea, but what about a toy ball? I
know there are compressed rubber balls (also called "super balls") of many
different sizes that might be drilled to fit the shaft. A hole slightly
smaller than the shaft might make a nice slip on fit. They are ridiculously
inexpensive. Color? I don't know how lucky you'd be at getting a grey one.
I've seen some cool swirly multicolor ones as well as solid color.
