Did you see that issue of Nuts & Volts a year or two ago that had a kinetic
sculpture like this on the cover? The music was all synthesized but there
was an entire display that went with it--an orchestra of whimsical insects
playing musical instruments IIRC. It also had fountains going in time with
the music and a light show in the water. Lots of solenoid valves and
whatnot involved.

They guy who built it was a dentist and he has it in his waiting room. I
forget how much he said he spent on it. The biggest problem was the water
leaking all over the electronics underneath.
