There's a functional difference: Matrix pins may have built-in resistors.
You could simulate this to a degree by using DT switches with a series
resistor on one side. Throw the switch one way for a wide open connection,
throw it the other way for an attenuated connection.

A pin matrix is more compact, but everything has its price. :-)

Oh, there's also the somewhat kludgey trick where a pin has a lead (a wire)
coming out of it. Synthis use that for something...
