There are a lot of cool places to start but this one I think would be
excellent for someone building a first synth.
Check out the links there too.
I like to use VST virtual synths to help design analog gear. I don't know if
anyone else does this, but I find it fun and very economical. I can try out
a lot of thinsg and only build the stuff that sounds like what I want. (I
also keep in mind that a virtual synth won't have the character of an analog
synth on many levels - sound and user interface most importantly.)
There are scads of free VST plug-ins (I don't like active-x stuff). And some
free hosts. Here's a good start:
