These seem to be rarer today. I know the evolution of the real
thing from 50's 'Hi-Fi' and onward. The guys who really cared
about music and saved their money until they could have their rack
of McIntosh gear and it delivered. (Or in the fictional realm,
the Philip K. Dick character of the same type. Always thought it
an odd bit of character development but liked its *specificity*.)
But in the past 20 years or so something went off the rails.
For the original crowd it must be like going to a meeting of
Physics Laureats and finding it's been hijacked by a Star Trek and
free energy convention. I feel for the poor b*stards...
As for the CDs, well, that's the fault of all of us who bought the
'perfect reproduction' sales pitch coughed up by marketing hacks.
Ah, the folly of yout'.
