Oof, what a nightmare!
I think that electronic gear can only be in carry-on luggage.  Even then it 
can cause problems.

I regularly fly to the Czech Republic with little bits of recording gear, 
and once I had the search room in a real panic.  Amongst other gear and a 
laptop, I had two AKG C1000 mics (long cylindrical things) together in a 
case, and to the x-ray guy it looked like something much more sinister.
Luckily they didn't blow it up.
