You can use any VCO in the midwest designs...   He just chose the 556 
because it's easy to implement.

His designs are pretty much a trigger shaper, simple EG  that modulates 
pitch and decay, VCO, impact generator (R/C filter, if I recall correctly) 
noise source with VCA and a mixer.

He goes over all of it in the Electronic Drum Cookbook, which is a fairly 
fun little book if you're just starting out with electronic drums.

hello again...

in my quest for nasty analog drums, i've come across a few i like at 
midwest-analog..    looking over them tho, they use the 566 for the VCO.. 
since that's sort of unavailable, can i sub a simple LFO or VCO here?
