I guess what makes the most difference (both soundwise and 
construction-difficulty-wise) is that the digital oscillators can stay 
perfectly in phase with each other while being wildly modulated.

It's not easy to think of a way of having VCOs behaving like that. (And 
frankly, I'm not sure that the result would be very interesting either!)
