  Ah, the old "emergency flash recovery" trick.  The bootloaders we did 
for some PIC-based products used a similar sort of thing that always 
guaranteed it would drop into a default firmware-update mode until a 
successful update was noted,  Likewise, the bootloader was placed on a 
protected page so that runaway flash actions did not cripple the device in 
the field.

  Used this on the PIC16F876 and PIC16F6520.  About to use it on the 
dsPIC30F6012.
