John, Interesting.... vactrols usually have pretty obvious slewing when hit with a sudden control signal change. Maybe you will have to trace it out. "381" might be LM381 which is a nice old preamp chip dating back to 1973 or so. Then again, maybe the assembly is an LED/LDR-based compander... ??? Regards, Mike
