Torsten!
Its very easy to get rid of it, place a multiplying 8 bit dac at the end!
You dont need a VCA and a DAC channel, only a DAC, 8 bits are enough for 
volumes. You connect the YAC512 DAC output to the (eg TLC 7524,standard
multiplying DAC)"REFERENCE input of the mul DAC then simply a standard
Bifet OP at the output of the mul dac! This is what you do when you
want a SID chip to be absolutely silent too!

Why the TLC7524? because its industrial standard can deal with minus 
voltages, are very accurate, can be driven serialy with a eg HC4094.
Or similar pa to ser.And its the "cheapest" mul dac available, multi source!
And it will give you a much better solution than a gate function!
