Not sure if this is what you are after, but I have had very good
cost-to-performance luck with Ken Stone's boards
(http://www.cgs.synth.net).  You will have to hand build the front panels,
but if you do that, and populate the boards with through-hole parts you
buy surplus at places like electronics goldmine
(http://www.goldmine-elec.com/default.htm), you can get great sounding and
reliable modules at a very reasonable price.
