You *could*,  however,  on a lot of that early stuff,  pretty well comprehend 
the whole thing -- from the logic in the hardware on up through the operating 
system (such as it was),  and all of the applications,  in as much detail as 
you wanted to bother with.

I haven't felt that comfortable with stuff since my CP/M days!

And now I use all these computers that are many orders of magnitude more 
complicated,  and just don't worry about most of those levels.  Even open 
source isn't that much of a deal for me,  unless I want to go in there and 
modify something,  which doesn't happen too often these days.
