that's a very good argument. one does not exclude the other. and my interest
in diy comes from not only not being able to afford things, but also the
'search for new sound'. i've always been a sucker for weird cheap stuff that
makes cool noises, so i actually came in from the circuit bending side.. and
no synth i have can make the noises my speak & spells or 76477 can make.

how about 2 cd's, 6 or 7 albums, a bunch of ep's, and even a 7" single? i
even play live and tour with my home built/ circuit bent stuff. we're out
there, young man..;-)

i know plenty of people from the techno/ electro/ electronica/IDM side of
things that are into synth diy. i won't even mention the whole noise scene
with folks building their own pedals and noise making generators. And dare i
mention the people building all kinds of fantastic controllers for
experimental stuff?
one does not exclude the other. it's what i like about electronic music: you
can learn to do it all. in 'conventional' rock, you have musicians,
writers, arrangers, producers, recording techs, equipment makers.. in EM you
can do it all, the whole process from designing and building your own stuff
to the final mastering for vinyl or cd.
