Thanks Jim & Harry (& everyone else) for your very useful advice :)

I now feel ready to go play at the breadboard with a handfull of OpAmps, 
BJTs, JFETs & MOSFET ICs ... but not tonight: the wife will be most 
upset if I don't come out of my laboratory and go and celebrate new year 
with her!

Happy New Year to all those in Asia and Australia, and Future Happy New
