The 4049UB (for correctness... there is no 4049B anyway :^) is a different
animal than the 4069. It has the input diode protection done in a different
way
(no upper diode) so it can be used as a buffer to translate from one supply
voltage to another. It also does not have symmetrical current source, and
sink.
At 15V it can source 8mA, and sink 45mA. Its obvious that driving TTL was the
intent. It has a bizarre pinout to match an earlier CMOS chip (4009, iirc)
The 4069 is a more 'normal' member of 4000 series family, symmetrical source /
sink, normal pinout (Vdd on pin 14, Vss on pin 7). It is socket compatible
with the
40106 or 4584 schmitt trigger inverters as well (a handy thing sometimes...)
I tried the 4049 in linear mode, once, and was not pleased. Your results may
vary.
